You have a fetch. A zerk is coming at you. The zerk is too close for your fetch to fire. 

Simple. 

Quickly attack ground behind the zerk at a logical distance. Your going to lose the fetch anyway right? May as well take some of him with you. Short, sweet, to the point. I wonder why I have never seen anyone else do this? Occasionally the fetch will survive so it's
worth the effort.
