After the bending of entire armies by The Watcher at the foot
of Tharsis, the Fallen sent their minions into the cultured cities
of the West. Their greatest horror was visited inside the Great
Hall of the late General Annodam. There his loyal men faced those
of the dark, often not knowing who was on their side and who was
their mortal enemy until it was too late. They hacked amongst
each other, amid the books and tables, and spilled their blood
on the priceless carpets and tapestries of civilizations long
dead. After seven hours of combat the men of the light had finally
triumphed over those whose souls the Fallen had stolen. They stumbled
to their knees, too weary to bask in victory, when to their horror
new waves of undead stumbled in. A new battle raged until every
last warrior light and dark lay dead for the last time.
Years later King Alric bestowed this great castle on a favored
general. When the grand doors swung open again for the first time
since the slaughter, a page turned green and shuddered, "I cannot
go farther, Sire. What is that foul stench?" Alric scowled, not
at the boy, but at the squandered valor, and strode inside. His
only reply was, "It smells of death in here."
